In a day of mixed results for Wallasey Athletic Club members, Andy Fulton recorded a personal best in winning the high jump with 5 ft 1 inch, not content with this Andy also won the javelin with a throw of over 40 metres and took runners up position in the shot competition.
Bob Brimage set a best in the 800 metres and a good sign so early in the season, the time of 2 min. 6 secs. was good enough for 3rd place.
Over the longer 3,000 metre event Mike Teahan ran below par in recording 9 min. 46 secs. for 10th position.
Still on the track Brian Kanes was 2nd in the boys 100 metres in 13.5 secs. and Eddie Kanes 6th in the boys' 800 metre in 2 min 28 secs.
Gwyn Griffiths could only manage 4 min. 48 secs. for the
1500 metres well below his true ability. The number of field event athletes was again disappointing, one of the club's only young athletes of this type Andy Reid recorded 4.35 metres to take 5th in the boys long jump.
Wallasey Athletic Club were host to the Northern Veterans who held their 10 km. road race round the Wallasey streets. The individual winner was A. Walsham (Salford Harriers) in 29 min. 43 secs., a course record and nearly three minutes faster than last years' winner S. Hardacker (Manchester A.C.) who had to settle for 2nd with Ken Hall (Wirral A.C.) close behind in 3rd.
The event provided the usual keen competition the veterans still enjoy, winner of the over 50s-race was N. Ashcroft (Sutton Harriers) who was 7th overall.
Today Wallasey A.C. has three ladies teams entered in
cross-country races at Stoke.
The senior team with three to count will be Janice Watts,
Helen Thomas and the two Caldwell sisters Mary and Margaret. They should be well placed providing some recent injuries can be shaken off.
