The 10th annual Chris Voss Road Race attracted eight Wallasey Athletic club members. The warm conditions slowed all the runners down the race being won in 34 mins. 30 secs. by Alan Birks (City of Stoke A.C.), from the English Cross-Country Champion, Trevor Wright of Hallamshire A.C.
Wallasey had four runners in the first 50 places,
Dave Lockley took 34th place in 37 mins. 53 secs., obviously lacking stamina after a long hard track season but still being the sixth runner from Liverpool & District.
Phil Wealthy was the next home in 44th place, eighth local runner home, just beating club captain John Wright, who took 47th place with Dave Lindsey 50th in his first run for nearly 12 months.
In 64th place was Mike Whiteside, stepping down his distance; the following day he followed this up with 15th place in the Swinton '10' running a personal best of 53 mins. 36 secs. Behind Mike were Dave Hughes, B. Brimage, John Lynch, Carl Gee and Robin Tarrant all finishing strongly. Today, Wallasey have entered the Northern Counties Road Relay Championships, held this year at Blackpool.
The six 4 mile stages will be contended by all the top Nothern clubs and the Wallasey team will be doing well to finish in the first 10.
