At the National Novices Cross-Country Championships held at Birmingham last Saturday six of the Wallasey Athletic Club's senior ladies returned creditable places against stiff competition over a very muddy 4,000m course.
The club's first counter, in 11th place, was Margaret Ashcroft, showing a welcome return to form, Janice Watts struggled through to 16th place in the slow conditions which seemed to suit a rapidly improving Mary Caldwell who followed at 17th.
Further back the younger, Sue Carter was 33rd with Jean Beswick at 36th and Audrey McKay at 41st. Lyn Carter, in the under 12 race, gained seventh place after a fierce final sprint.
In the men's inter-counties championship held at Derby on an equally muddy and hilly seven mile course, Dave Lindsey representing Cheshire was fifth counter in 136th place, having faded a little over the last two miles.
Bob Brimage ran an excellent race in the junior championship finishing as the county's fourth counter at 57th. Gwyn Griffiths returned 175th in the youths' race over three-miles.
Today the ladies are again out in force with the added stimulus of county champion Barbara Banks, and they should rank as a team amongst the county's elite at the inter-county championship at Arrowe Park.
