Three ladies' teams from Wallasey Athletic Club collected prizes at New Brighton last Saturday in the 3 x 1,000 metres road relay, part, of the Wallasey Festival of Sport.
Bolton United Harriers won with a total time of 10 mins. 29 secs. Second were Wallasey's 'A' team (L. Carter, A. Edwards and B, Banks) in 10 mins. 58 secs. followed by Wallasey 'B' (D. Kelly, H. Taylor and M. Ashcroft) with 11 mins. 3 sec.
The 1st 'B' team home were Wallasey 'C' team (L. Hewson V. Higginson and S. Brimage) in 11 mins. 24 secs.
City of Stoke A.C. won the men's 7 mile road race with, a perfect result of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Appreciation is due to the donors of the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo Cup which the winners took back to Stoke.
Liverpool Harrier were 2nd with 23 points and Wirral A.C. 'A' team 3rd with 29 points. The first 'B' team home were also from Wirral.
In the North Wales Championships at Colwyn Bay, Gwyn Griffiths achieved two personal best times, running the 800 metres in 2 mins. 6.4 seconds and the 1,500 metres in 4 min. 27 sec.
Farther afield, at Meadowbank Stadium, Pete Lewis, running for Birmingham University, returned a personal best 800m, of 1 min. 52.5 secs.
In the Cheshire Schools championships at Port Sunlight, Phil Wade ran a personal best 400 metres in 53.7 secs, to finish 2nd in the junior race, thus confirming this to be his best season yet. Dave Ashton finished 3rd in the youths' race, having produced a qualifying time of 53.8 secs. in his heat.
Clearly these two sprinters will soon be challenging for much coveted places in the club's senior 400 metres relay team. Chris Preston gained 3rd place in the hammer with a throw of 120ft. 4in.
At Stretford the previous Tuesday, Janice Watts snatched 2nd place from colleague Barbara Banks in a photo finish in the ladies' 800 metres, both recording 2 mins. 18 secs., with Margaret Ashcroft close in attendance with a personal best time of 2 mins. 23 secs.
Dave Lockley, fighting unfitness and injury, produced an encouraging time of 15 mins. 06 secs. in the 5,000 metres, only 5 secs. outside his personal best, and Phil Wealthy returned 1 min. 58.5 secs., in the 800 m, after a fast first lap of 55 sec. Eddie Kanes also gained a personal best in the boys' 1,500 m, with a time of 4 mins. 52 secs.
