Six Wallasey Athletic Cub girls travelled to Carlisle last Saturday to take part in the Northern Road Relay Championships.
Anne Edwards ran strongly. She is a relative newcomer to the ranks of Wallasey Athletic Club, but led off for the intermediates and came back seventh. Indications are that she will be a great boost to the team in the future.
Julie halfpenny took over, and despite a steady run came up against some tough opposition and dropped two places. On the last leg, Susan Lloyd made up quite a bit of ground on the leaders but was in the unenviable position of having no-one near enough to catch, and nobody pushing her from behind.
In the senior race, a last minute tactical decision sent Mary Caldwell off first. Mary has little chance to train in London during term time, but now the holidays are under way she is catching up fast. This was demonstrated in Saturday's run, when she came back seventh, not far behind the three girls, in front.
Barbara Banks took over, and, because the middle leg is usually the weakest she was able to pull up to second position Janice Watts had the unhappy task of actually setting off behind the Northern Champion, Jean Lochead.
Jean was expected to increase her lead considerably, but when they both reappeared half a mile from the finish Janice had lost very little ground, and must be congratulated on a good run. The final team positions were 1, Airedale and Spen Valley; 2, Wallasey; 3, Preston.
At Arrowe Park the annual cross-country championships of the men's section were held, Dave Lockley had a convincing win over, the six-mile course. In the early stages he warded off an attack by Bob Warburton, still a junior, who finished second. Bob Brimage beat the rest of the field to gain third place. Gwyn Griffiths won the junior event and Dave Ashton won the boys' race, as expected, with Brendan Kelly second. Officers elected at the club's A.G.M. on March 24 were: President, E. J.
