With the cross-country running season due to open in a fortnight some 21 members of Wallasey Athletic Club had a preliminary canter from the club winter quarters in Leasowe Road last Saturday.
Owing to recent rain the country was heavy and flooded in places, making the pace slow with the pack holding together. Roughly 4½ miles of country and shore were covered under the leadership of the club captain, J. Edwards, and the course selected was suitable for youths as well as seniors.
G. K. Williams, runner-up in last season's club championship, was first home, followed by J. M. Rimmer and G. K. Walker, P. Hawksley, the youngest runner taking part, ran well on his first appearance with the club.
Runs will be held from Leasowe Road each Saturday at 3 p.m. when a trainer and masseur will be in attendance,
The hon. secretary of Wallasey Athletic Club is R. F. Hubbard, of 39 Beech Road, Birkenhead (telephone Birkenhead 3550) and he will be pleased to hear from any prospective members. Subscriptions are 5s. over 21 and 2s 6d. under-21, per annum.
