Juniors (18-21) took first two places in the New Year Cross-Country Handicap promoted by Wallasey Athletic Club over an eight miles course at Leasowe last Saturday.
Malcolm Ward, with an allowance of 5 mins. 15 secs., ran well to gain an eight second victory over A. Simpson, youths' captain, who showed a fine return to form to overcome the handicap penalty he incurred with 2nd place in the Christmas Handicap, his mark on this occasion being 5 minutes. Simpson actually returned fourth fastest time and Ward fifth fastest, which gives an indication of the improvement these two young sturdy runners are making. W. G. WiIIiams, stylish and sprightly with 20 seasons as a regular running member of Wallasey Athletic Club behind him gave a great display of sound tactical running to take 3rd place, three seconds ahead of A. Dickinson, who returned second fastest time. His brother Denis also came through well to finish sixth, recording 3rd fastest time of the day. A number of runners did not take part in the handicap and had an easy run over a shorter course. J. Edwards, off scratch, did fastest time.
