After being a mere one second behind the leaders at half distance (13 miles 192 yds.) Wallasey A.C. fell away badly and could finish no better than fourth in the Merseyside Marathon Road Relay Race at Sefton Park last Saturday. The race was won by Liverpool Harriers with Liverpool Pembroke second, and Wirral A.C. third.
Wallasey were fourth at the end of the first relay, though R. C. Leach, making one of his all, too rare appearances with the club, ran cleverly and made up a lot of ground in the later stages to finish his relay only 44 secs. behind the leaders. R. Johnston and D. Kelly, running 2nd and 3rd relays respectively, again registered first-class performances (what a successful season these two youth's have had) and reduced the lead to 32 seconds. J Edwards, who took over for the fourth relay, has run many better races, but he succeeded in cutting down the lead to a negligible one second. E. C. Foster, who ran fifth relay, was well below his best and could not hold his speedy rivals. D. Dickinson tried manfully to restore the position, but R. E. Young, who ran the seventh relay, was badly off form and lost further ground, giving W. R. Bee no chance to improve the club's position on the last relay. Bee was in fine fettle and despite the hopeless position and running off the course, which forced him to retrace his steps, he made the second fastest relay of the day. Fastest came from N. Graves, of Wirral A.C., who did 16 mins. 38 secs. for the 3¼ miles 44 yards against Bee's 16 mins. 57 secs.
