Eric Foster, former Wallasey Grammar School cross-country champion and Victor Ludorum winner, now vice-captain of Wallasey Athletic Club won the club's novice cross-country championship over a 5¾ miles course at Leasowe last Saturday.
Although he made the running right from the start Foster did not have matters all his own way Jim Rice, a fancied winner, was right behind Foster going along the embankment when he was attacked by severe cramp in the legs and forced to retire, but along came a surprise challenger in H. Thompson, who drew level with Foster near Leasowe Common and held on all the way round the course to the finishing straight in Leasowe Road.
Indeed, Thompson's great effort provided the main thrill of the afternoon. Sturdily built and economic in action, Thompson showed what can be done by steady evening training without being able to turn out often on Saturdays. He made a big effort over the last half-mile but Foster was just too speedy for him and the final margin between the two runners was about 15 yards. A long-service member in C. R. Hewson deservedly filled third place after a tussle with R. F. Hubbard and R. McCaig, the latter giving quite a good performance in his first distance race. Foster holds the Wright Cup and the first three received W.A.C. medals.
Result : - 1st, E. C. Foster, 33 mins. 18 secs.: 2nd, H. Thompson, 33 mins. 20 secs.: 3rd, C. R. Hewson 36 mins. 15 secs.
