One of the most popular events in the calendar takes place at Leasowe Road this Saturday, when Wallasey Athletic Club stages its annual Christmas Handicap over a 4½ miles course of road, path and shore.
Some of the traditional prizes like whiskey and turkeys have disappeared but, in accordance with time-honoured custom, each finisher will receive a prize. The Mayor (Alderman J. L. Gill) will start the race and present the prizes. The first man away will start at 3-30 p.m. prompt. Several previous winners will be in the field of approximately 30 runners and some of Wallasey's best distance men among the back-markers. J. Edwards, the Wallasey and former Liverpool & District Champion, will be on actual scratch, a mark from which he has already won one Christmas Handicap, and J. S. Arkless, fastest time last year, will also be amongst the back-markers.
