Wallasey Athletic Club's track star Barney Kivlin, added three county titles to his long series of successes by winning the hop, step and jump, the 440 yards hurdles and the 120 yards hurdles in a decisive manner at the Cheshire County Athletic Championships at the Oval, Bebington, on Saturday.
Kivlin has represented the British Army, and is a Northern Counties' past champion at the hop, step and jump. Other Wallasey athletes who put up commendable performances, and who were placed in the first 3 in their events, included John Abbott (County representative) in the shot and javelin, Bob Jones in the long jump, Matt Smith in the high jump, and Ted Bollard in the javelin. In the mile Dennis Dickinson continued to improve upon his previous results this season, returning the creditable time of 4 mins. 48 secs. to finish 4th. Each of these athletes has trained consistently during the past weeks, and the value of their work is reflected in the measure of success achieved.
The club has secured the services of several prominent local athletes who will attend at the Tower Athletic Ground on various evenings in June to give instruction. Next week at 7 p.m., on Monday evening, June 7th, Tommy Hampson (Achilles and Liverpool Harriers) the only British Olympic record holder (800 metres), will be coaching for the 880 yards and mile events. Club members are urged to give this new venture the enthusiastic support it deserves. The club invites any active athlete to attend these coaching sessions.
