Wallasey Athletic Club members again put up good performances last week in track and field and weight-lifting events. At St. Helens Police Sports last Saturday, a final desperate burst to break the tape gave Denis Dickinson his second victory of the season in open mile races.
Dickinson, now at the peak of his form, returned the excellent time of 4 mins. 12 secs. off the 145 yard mark to win by inches. This is roughly equivalent to 4 mins. 35 secs. off scratch. At the same meeting high jumper Matt Smith was credited with a jump of 6 ft. 5 ins. off a handicap of 11 ins. to register his first win this season.
Bob Jones, of the weight-lifting section of Wallasey Athletic Club, holder of the British 11 stone right hand snatch record at 156 lbs., had bad luck last week when he lifted 159 lbs.; the new figure is not acceptable as a new record, since Jones himself was two lbs. overweight at the time.
At Congleton last Saturday in the A.T.C. Sports, Woodward, of 273 (Wallasey) Squad., A.T.C., won the high jump at 5 ft. 2 ins., breaking his left arm in doing so.
