Last Saturday afternoon the Novice Championship of Wallasey Athletic Club, run over a 5 mile course, was won by Bill Wright in 32 minutes 34 seconds, with John Hawkesley second and Brian Smith third.
Wright in a strong runner who has trained consistently this season to earn his success. Bob McCaig suffered bad luck, when he was in a strong position during the early stages of the race, a pulled leg muscle forcing him to retire.
Of the senior runners who are training hard for the Cheshire County Championships next month, club captain John Arkless and junior captain Harold Thompson recorded under 42 minutes 25 seconds, which is the fastest time yet this season over the 7 mile course.
Next Saturday, two teams from Wallasey Athletic Club (Messrs. Foster, Dinsdale, Wright, Tony Dickinson, Hawkesley, Hewson, McCaig, Bollard, Ward, Brian Smith, Mason, Scammell, Lancaster, Webster and Gee) will travel to Runcorn to compete in the West Lancashire Novices Championships. Coach leaves Seacombe Ferry (floating roadway) at 1-15 p.m. prompt and picks up at Birkenhead Town Hall at 1-30 p.m.
Club members and friends are reminded that Wallasey Athletic Club annual dance will be held at the Grosvenor Ballroom next Saturday night.
