In their first match of the new track season at Leasowe Road playing fields last Saturday afternoon, Wallasey Athletic Club scored a victory over the Winnington Park Recreation Club by 70 points to 68 due to their superiority in the team and junior (under 19) events.
The mid-afternoon thunderstorm was mainly responsible for disappointing figures in the field events. In the medley relay team race, Arkless (W.A.C.) ran a strong first quarter to establish a lead which was maintained throughout the race; whilst in the 2 mile team race W.A.C. cross-country men fought the race out amongst themselves the winner being Dinsdale in 11 mins. 3 secs.
Wallasey juniors had a good day despite strong opposition from Wilding, the W.P.R.C, all-rounder, Prydderch, Harris, Hawksley, Roberts, Weir and Owen all won their events.
Noteworthy track performances were recorded by Tony Dickinson (W.A.C.) senior half-miler and Weir, W.A.C. junior miler.
The final two coaching seasons of the present fortnight took place last week. On Monday evening Mr. C. W. Jones, of the Birkenhead School, supported by a team of young athletes from the School demonstrated their training of growing boys in the throwing field events by the use of graded weights of weapons. On Wednesday evening Jack Pozzi, former Northern Counties long jump record holder, coached in the long jump and the hop, step and jump.
Training for men and women's sections continues at Leasowe Road playing fields on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, evenings between 7 and 9 p.m., preparatory to the Cheshire County Championships at Port Sunlight Recreation Ground on, Whit Saturday, June 4th (closing date for entries May 23rd), and the new Birkenhead and Wirral Sports Festival at Upton Cricket Club on Whit Monday, June 6th (closing date for entries Thursday, May 26th).
