A small party of Wallasey Athletic Club members travelled to R.A.F. Cosford on Saturday to take part in an open indoor meeting.
Pete Lewis was the first to compete and was third in the 1,000 metres in a time of 2 minutes. 30 secs. Margaret Ashcroft ran a new personal best in the 3,000 metres, reducing her previous best 10 mins. 45 secs. to 10 mins. 8 secs. and came second. Janice Watts ran later in the 1,000 metres and also came second, showing a great deal of off-season speed in 3 minutes exactly.
Dave Lockley took part in the gruelling 2,000 metres steeplechase. He also chalked up a new personal best and finished strongly in second place in 5 mins. 44.8 sees.
This weekend Margaret Ashcroft, Janice Watts and Barbara Banks are running for the North in the inter-league at Watford.
Wallasey school teams did exceptionally well in the junior, intermediate and senior cross-country championships held in bad weather last weekend at The Oval, Port Sunlight.
In the junior event Lynn Carter (Withensfield) finished fourth in a gruelling race. Diane Kelly ran a well judged race to finish 16th and was the only competitor from St. Mary's College. Hilary Upton was 52nd for Wallasey High School and Gillian Forshaw and Lindsay Hewson finished 80th and 105th for Oldershaw School.
Also competing were Withensfield, E. Bamborough (138), J. Poyning (139), P. Preston (152), N. Williams (151) and S. Shirley. Wallasey High School, Ann Rivers, K. Noltage, R. Foster, C. Tooke, F. Quillan and S. Brown.
More than 160 girls finished the course from a starting field of nearly 200.
In the intermediate race 50 finished the course Helen Taylor (Wallasey High School) ran well to finish 5th and Ann Edwards (Upton Hall Convent) finished 14th. Also competing for Wallasey High were Pam Reovson (27th) Ann Redhead (26th) and Yvonne Starkey (11th).
In the senior race Jill Poyning put in a good performance, along with Susan Lloyd (Wallasey High School) Audrey Mackay (Wallasey Technical High School) and Julie Halfpenny (Oldershaw School).
