Wallasey Athletic Club were hosts to the Northern Veterans Athletic Club on Sunday for the annual six and a half mile road race. This year's entry was the biggest ever with more than 50 contestants. j
The race started in Green Lane, going on to Leasowe Road and Wallasey Village, then to the back road of the promenade, on to Portland Street and up to Warren Drive.
Many of the competitors were great names of the past in distance running.
The results were:
Actual winners: 1, J. Wylde 32 min. 15 sec.; 2, K. Hall 32.36; 3, L. Nicholson (32.49).
Handicap winners: 1, A. Jolley. 2, J. Loftus; 3, N. Ashcroft.
Former athletes wishing to join the veterans' section of Wallasey Athletic Club should contact C. R. Hewson, 44 Albion Street, Wallasey (639 3217).
There was an inter-club meeting on Sunday at Wigan but only three Wallasey athletes took part.
Phil Truscot, recently appointed track captain, gave a good example to his club members with two fine performances. He won the men's long jump with a leap of 5 metres 39 cms and followed up by coming second in the 200 metres in a fine time of 23.5 secs. Dave Ashton carne sixth in the same race with a time of 24.5.
In the boys' 800 metres Dave Jones came sixth in a good early season time of 2 mins 31.6 secs.
As competition is a little scarce at this time of the year we would like to see more members, at the clubhouse on Saturdays for training.
