Several Wallasey Athletic Club members took part in the multi-sport Wirral marathon, which was staged to celebrate the new Merseyside authority on Easter Saturday.
The marathon began and finished in Birkenhead Park, and consisted of 14 stages, each being contested separately by entries from Birkenhead, Wallasey, Wirral, Bebington, Hoylake and the police.
Dave Lockley ran well in the first stage over three miles from Birkenhead Park to Guinea Gap, coming second for Wallasey behind Leo Carvell for Birkenhead. Both Dave Grey and Helen Taylor won their stages for Wallasey - mile-long stages for school age competitors.
They can both be commended for good judgement, running through to win in the last few yards.
Bob Brimage came second for Wallasey in the two-mile stretch finishing at Marine Lake, West Kirby, and Don
Stroud came sixth.
There was a shortage of competitors for the women's 1¼-mile run along the Wirral Way, and Wallasey supplied four of six girls taking part. Barbara Banks won for Wallasey, while Margaret Ashcroft was lent to Hoylake and came second. Susan Lloyd ran for Bebington and came fourth, and Audrey Mackay ran for Birkenhead and came fifth.
This weekend there is an inter-club meeting at Warrington, with all events on the programme on Saturday, and on Sunday a few athletes will be taking part in invitation races included on the programme with an inter-town international match at Kirkby.
