Wallasey Athletic Club's Barbara Banks continued her current fine form to win the 3,000 metre race in the Northern Championships held in Huddersfield.
The weather conditions were poor but her solo run in 9 mins. 59 secs. was all the more creditable. In the same race Margaret Ashcroft failed to reproduce her recent good form and lost out on a place at the tight finish.
Margaret managed to reverse the situation when she led her team home in the Wallasey Festival of Sport 3 x 1,000 metres relay race. The winning 'A' team members were Margaret Ashcroft, Llyn Carter and Sandi Jones.
Llyn produced an outstanding run, being not only the fastest junior girl; but her time was also faster than the best intermediate girl A. Woolton of Stoke.
For the Wallasey 'B' team the fastest leg of the day was run by Barbara Banks.
In the Festival's seven mile road race, Wallasey Athletic Club members made little impression as Liverpool Harriers dominated the event with three out of the first four home. Dave Lockley was Wallasey's best placed athlete in 16th position, with a time of 35 mins. 59 secs., Bob Brimage was 36th, Len Durkin 45th and Don Stroud 52nd.
In the inaugural Polytechnic Championships, Wallasey A.C. middle distance runners helped Liverpool Polytechnic to the highest medal total. Phil Wealthy gained two bronzes in the 400 metres and the 800 metres, while Pete Martin went one better with a silver in the 1,500 metres.
Seven mile road race results: 1, F. Davies (Liverpool, 33 mins, 8 secs.); 2, P. Carey, Liverpool 33:52; 3, J. McLoughlin, Sutton 34:35.
