Wallasey Athletic Club's Keith Sorrel pulled out a great performance in the senior boys' long jump to finish second at the English Schools Athletic Championships at the Oval, Bebington, last week.
Keith, who jumped 6.71 metres, was one of three club members elected to represent Cheshire schools at the meeting.
Keith's jump was particularly creditable in view of his recent spate of indifferent performances and underlines his potential as a senior athlete next season.
Chris Preston was bitterly disappointed with has seventh place in the hammer, making two no throws and only recording with has final throw. Unfortunately, his distance was well down on his recent form, which he hoped would secure a placing.
Paul Feeny was also dissatisfied with his 14th place in the high jump.
Without doubt, however, all the athletes benefited from the top-class competition, which unfortunately they get only too rarely, but without which progress is hard.
A senior athlete with such a problem is Phil Truscott, who, with no championship event on, competed in an inter-club competition at Stretford. He was, however, lucky in meeting a 400-metre, international in this event and being helped to a personal best time of 50.7 sec.
Today, both senior men and women will be competing at an inter-club event at Warrington. Anyone interested in joining Wallasey Athletic Club should contact Phil Wealthy at 53 Northcote Road, Wallasey, or phone 638 7330 for details.
St. George's Middle School athletes swept the board once again in the Wallasey Middle Schools Athletic Championships. For the second year in succession the teams won the following championships: 1st Year Boys' Trophy, 1st Year Girls' Trophy, 2nd Year Boys' Trophy, 2nd Year Girls' Trophy. 3rd Year Boys' Trophy, 3rd Year Girls' Trophy.
