J. H. Potts (Saltwell) ran brilliantly in the Northern Championships at Stockton last Saturday to win the senior event for the third successive year.
There was a field of 120 runners and the race was run over a three lap course, a total distance of 9 miles. At one period Potts led by over 200 yards, but in the last two miles Burns came up strongly and was only 50 yards behind at the finish. The winner's time was 49 mins, 27.5 secs. The team race was won by Salford with 76 points.
The junior race over two laps of the course was won by G. S. Burditt, of Hallamshire with team honours going to Sale. Sutton, second in the West Lancashire race, were third, a few points behind Sheffield Harriers. The youths' event over one lap went to A. D. Ridley of Sunderland, in a time of 15 mins. 48 secs. Liverpool Pembroke were second in the team race, next to Sheffield United H.
To-day's Race.
Wallasey A.C., having modestly decided that their chances were not good enough to justify the journey to Stockton, did not compete in the Northern Championships. Instead, members turned put for an easy training run in preparation for the Liverpool & District Championships, to-day, The club enters for this event with high hopes. The senior team will be considerably strengthened by the inclusion of K. Westmore and the return of J. Cunningham and F. Ledward. After their brilliant performance in the Northern, Pembroke are practically certain to win the race, but Wallasey appear to have an excellent chance of gaining second or third place. The club's! junior team is still a little doubtful as it is not certain whether W. Davey will be able to get out to defend his title. If he can, a success in this race is assured. The Wallasey youths' team has so far this season been very disappointing. However, if they can produce their undoubted running ability, there is no reason why they should not be well up, with Andrew and Fishwick making a good bid for individual honours.
