A large muster of runners started the New Year in a most energetic fashion last Saturday, when Wallasey A. C. held a training run from their Leasowe Road headquarters, P. Watson made a welcome reappearance after his enforced absence of several weeks.
K. Westmore, the Liverpool University captain, who is now definitely joining the club, was also out. This season he will only be available for the team when the University have not got a fixture but in the course of the next few years be should prove a great asset.
The runners started out in two packs, covering the 7½ mile course. The first pack, led by W. Davy and N. Marples, set out well ahead of Westmore and Edwards, the club champion. The course was in good condition, and Davy and Marples set up a fast pace, soon outdistancing their club-mates. Over the country the two runners kept together, but down the last mile of road, Marples opened out and running very powerfully finished first, with Davy to the rear. The latter, unfortunately does not get an opportunity for regular training. At his best he can challenge any runner in the district, and providing he is fit at the time, he should easily retain the junior title in the Liverpool & District Championships.
Of the other runners, Hopkins and Rimmer showed promising form, while J. Whittingham also did quite well. Westmore and Edwards gave their clubmates too big a start to overtake them, but they returned the fastest time, Westmore beating Edwards into the finish by about 30 yards.
To-day, Wallasey A.C. visit St. Helen's Junction for their fixture with Sutton and Boundary Harriers. The opposition is very formidable for Sutton include in their team two international runners. Success can hardly be anticipated, but at full strength Wallasey should put up a good show.
