Athletics in Wallasey is definitely on the up-grade. This was clearly demonstrated last Saturday when there, was a muster of 29 runners at the headquarters of Wallasey A.C. for the second official home run of the season.
This was a record for the club and is a very encouraging sign of a revival of interest in cross-country running, evident throughout the district.
The most pleasing feature of the season so far has been the large number of young runners taking up the sport. It is clear that whatever misgivings Wallasey A.C. may have about the senior team, the youths and juniors in the club should be easily able to hold their own with the best on Merseyside. With consistent training they may look forward confidently to a successful championship year.
The novice team, which did so well in the Monstre Meet a fortnight ago, also shows great promise. On Saturday they conceded a start of 5 mins. to the rest of the runners and spurred on by J. Edwards, the club champion, they
made good time over the seven mile course. K. Andrew in particular ran extremely well to finish in fine style down Leasowe Road a good way ahead of his nearest clubmate. Of the youths' pack, which took a rather shorter 5-mile run, the form of two newcomers to Wallasey, A.C. was very impressive, Dunn and Sisson, turning out for the first time this season, kept up quite a fast pace to come in first and second respectively. They undoubtedly have the natural ability and only require training to develop into first-class runners. Meanwhile in the slow pack, P. Watson, making a welcome re-appearance in the club after being laid up for several weeks with a sprained ankle, did very well to lead the way home with C. Peers close behind.
To-day, Wallasey have an away fixture with Pembroke A.C. the district champions. The club will be represented by a team of ten. For other members there will be an ordinary training run from Leasowe Road headquarters commencing at 3.15 prompt.
