In the casualty list published on Monday by the War Office appears the name of Second-Lieut. Alan Pennington of the Border Regiment, son of Alderman J. Pennington.
He was wounded in France, being shot in the left hand by a revolver at close range. Fortunately he has now made a complete recovery and has rejoined his unit. Alan Pennington who is 23 years of age is known throughout the athletic world for his prowess as a sprinter. He won the Junior A.A.A, and the Public Schools championship, twice doing the 100 yards in 10 3-10 seconds, and is an Oxford Blue. He won the A.A. quarter mile championship and holds the English (native) record. He represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936. His eldest brother, John, is a sub-lieutenant (R.N.V.R.) in the Fleet Air Arm.
Lieut. Pennington's father, Alderman Pennington, the leader of the Council, was himself wounded in the last war in which he held a commission. He was wounded at Givenchy on April 9, 1918, as a result of which his right hand was amputated.
