The Cheshire Road Relays were held on a tough, hilly course from the Frodsham Community Centre last Sunday.
Wallasey Athletic Club entered teams for colts, boys and senior age groups, the first time for some time that they have been able to do so and a clear Indication of the revitalisation of the club.
The colts race was run over a course of 1 mile laps and the team consisted of 4 runners. First lap was run by Neil Tunstall, who is short of the necessary training due to other commitments in a time of 6 min. 15 secs. He handed over to Kevin McGee, a comparative newcomer to the club in his first
race for it.
He returned the fastest time for the club with a lap of 5 min. 55 secs. and handed over to Gary Henwood. He returned a time, of 6 min. 59 sec. and handed to Colin Murphy another newcomer in his first race who returned in 6 mins. 44 sec.
The boys race was a relay of 4 runners over a 1½ mile lap course. First lap was by Chris Wright who returned in third position in a time of 8 min. 19 secs. Second lap was by Richard Hemmings, racing his first road race for the club after a quite successful track season; he returned in 9 min. 3 secs. Third leg by David Southern, another first timer completed in 9 min. 42 sec. and last leg by the club's most promising youth award winner for track events, Phil Ashley. He returned in 9 min. 8 secs.
It should be mentioned that many of the boys were involved in schools cross-country race at Arrowe Park the day before. Anybody that has run there will know just how energy sapping the ground is and its obvious effect on the performances over a fast road course the following day. Chris Wright finished third in his race over the tough 3-mile course.
Back to the road and the seniors team. Two laps each for the seniors of the 1½-mile course which meant running up the gruelling 600 yards or so of hill twice.
The team of six ran well to finish in seventh position and
was made up of Bob Brimage finishing 5th in 17 min. 34 secs.; Pete Jones 8th in 19 min. 9 secs.; John Wright, 7th in 17 min. 37 secs.; Rod Dixon, 7th in 18 min. 51 secs.; Doug Hanna (the unfit coach), 7th in 20 min. 6 secs.; Len Durkin, 7th in 19min. 42 sec.
