There's a fair smattering of athletics events in the festival starting on Wednesday, June 4 with the Birkenhead Park Five Mile Road Race, with a boys section at 7 p.m. and the senior section at 7.30 p.m.
This is the 4th year of the Birkenhead Park 5, which has become a well established event for athletes in the north-west. It also provides an opportunity for local sportsmen of all disciplines to have a go and last year over one hundred entries were received for the race. The race starts at Cannon Hill in the Lower Park at 7.30 p.m., and consists of four laps of the road, through the Lower Park. On the present form, Liverpool Harriers will prove difficult to beat, an interesting battle can be expected between Frank Davies, Pete Waddington (both previous winners) and Paul Carey for individual honours.
For the first time this year, a boy's race is being promoted over one lap of the park and this will start at 7 p.m. It is hoped that most of the local schools will be represented, and that the response will be as good as that for the senior race.
Sunday, June 15: 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
