Wallasey Athletic Club, founded in 1906, continues to keep a healthy membership, despite rising costs and the fact they no longer have a clubhouse headquarters to call their own.
They meet for gymnasium training at St. Georges School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (courtesy of the local council) and, in common with many other clubs, have a small nucleus of senior athletes and parents who do their best to ensure that all our members are taken in various vehicles to Woodchurch each Wednesday evening for the very important track training.
Our membership is increasing and because of this an association of support has been formed to raise money for a mini-bus although small events have been held with great success, we are still a long way off target.
The latest venture has risen from an offer by Cadbury's Football Club to sponsor an athletic meeting at their ground on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August.
To the uninitiated, the very fact that a football club and an athletic club are getting together is very unusual and both clubs intend to make a big success of the venture. Proceeds after expenses will be divided between both clubs, so it is hoped that the public will give their support. Cadbury's Football Club will provide the ground at Reeds Lane, Moreton, and have been instrumental in providing trophies. They have prepared a programme for sale at 10p each prior to the date and 15p admission on the day. Members of the public wishing to purchase programmes can contact any member of Wallasey Athletic Club. Jim McCulloch is assisting by selling them from his shop and pub, and any of the people at the following numbers will provide them: 638 4409, 630 2530, 639 3719, 638 8916, 639 4296. They can also be purchased at the ground on the day. The programme numbers are also to be raffled on the day for a grand prize of £50.
People connected with both clubs will provide facilities and refreshments on the day.
As there are no facilities for field events, Wallasey Athletic Club have decided that this will be an invitation trophy meeting of track events and, with this in mind, they have made the athletic programme as varied and entertaining as possible. The public will have an afternoon of good entertainment watching athletes small and large compete on an eight-lane track.
The clubs to compete are Chester And Ellesmere Port A. C., Deeside A.C., Frodsham A.C., Winsford A.C., Wirral A.C., Wrexham A.C. Wallasey A.C. and Cadbury's hope to field a team.
The trophies they will compete for are The Bass Charrington Trophy; presented by Bass Charrington of Warrington. The Baco Foil Trophy, presented by Baco Foil, London, The John Warren Trophy, presented by Cadbury's Warehouse Manager, The Arthur Dowe Shield, presented by Cadbury's Trades, West Supplies Trophy presented by West Supplies, Oxton Road, Birkenhead.
