If only people had turned out in force for the first two track league meetings as they did for the last meeting held at Pilkington's, St. Helens, on Saturday then Wallasey Athletic Club would not be faced with yet another step down the league ladder.
Those loyal and conscientious members who did perform did so extremely well, especially when each did around four or five events, many not considered in training.
This last meeting saw our club turn out 14 athletes instead of eight or nine as previous, which obviously is reflected in the 22 league best performances recorded at this meeting.
Kevin McGee finished the series with a personal best on cinder, performance, the best being his 4min 12 sec recorded when qualifying for the English Schools' Championships earlier this year.
Incidentally, he was the only boy in Wallasey to qualify for these national championships.
We were also extremely grateful for the versatility of Pete Smith, who, at his -first attempt, won the pole vault and competed extremely well in the 400m hurdles, 400m, 4 x 100m relay, long jump and high jump.
Chris Preston was available for this meeting and his valuable contribution in the field events will be sadly missed when he leaves the club at the close of the season.
Many senior club athletes will be on holiday this week, 6th until 13th, and the training facilities usually offered will not be available for that week as no supervision will be at hand.
All athletes and willing helpers, as well as spectators should note that on Wednesday, August 17, there is a Cheshire League meeting at Woodchurch Community Centre between ourselves, Deeside and Frodsham.
