We are always hearing of cancelled horse races, cancelled football matches, cancelled cricket matches and other weather governed sports.
Rarely, very rarely, will you hear about cancelled cross-country races. The extremes of weather during the past three weeks, biting winds and driving snow for the West Lancashire championship at Lancaster and cold but sunny conditions on Saturday last only add to the challenge of the event.
The Northern area is enormous, stretching from around south Manchester to northern Gateshead, so to finish 17th team is by no means shameful. It is, in fact, the club's best performance for a few years. We finished 4th of the local clubs behind Liverpool Pembroke 6th, Wirral 13th, Liverpool Harriers 15th.
Wallasey also had runners in the junior and senior events. Phil Ashley running well in the junior. Bob Brimage, the club captain, finished well up in the senior race, ahead of Len Durkin.
Youth results (4 miles): Rob Heap 43rd, 23m. 3.5s.: Kevin McGee 47th, 21m 43s; Dave Smith 136th, 27m 21s; Keith McAlister 149th. 35m. 05s.
Wallasey Athletic Club is starting the Wallasey schools' races again, after many years lay-off, because it believes that the interest in cross-country racing is again growing within the schools.
They will be on March 11 on St. George's playing fields. For further information about this or about the club, telephone the club captains, Anne or Bob Brimage on 638 8916. We have the knowledge to help you improve your athletics - why not use it?
