For the majority of Wallasey Athletic Club members the cross-country season virtually ended, only one or two Cheshire League matches being left for them.
The youths' team still has one major competition left, England's national cross-country championships; last year, in London, the team finished in the top third of the field. This year in Leeds its aims are higher.
It would be foolish to expect the team to finish in first place but, led by Kevin McGee, who has already been selected to run for Merseyside in the inter-county schools match and Rob Heap, who has reached his peak just at the right time and is currently challenging Kevin for first position in the team, the individual competition should be very exciting.
The 'national' attracts record entries every year, over 1,000 runners finishing in the senior nine-mile event and 600 in each of the junior and youths' races. If you are lucky, you may see the results stuck in the corner of the national newspapers. If you are wise, you will buy the News on the 11th and read a first hand report in this column.
During the same weekend, Wallasey Athletic Club are promoting the Wallasey schools races on St. George's Middle School playing fields, Leasowe Road commencing at 2pm. Your support would be most welcome at this event, as it would at any events attended by or promoted by Wallasey Athletic Club.
