The Wallasey Athletic Club members, under the careful guidance of coaches Barbara Majumdar and Doug Hanna are beginning to reap the benefits of rigorous training programme throughout the difficult winter months. Recent performances bear witness to these remarks.
Competitions, like the ones attended by many club members over the last weekend, provide much-needed competition when the enemy is the clock and not the opposition, taking the pressures away from the need to win.
On Saturday at Stretford, Rob Heap and Kevin McGee both recorded bests for the 800m of 1 min 57.2 secs and 1 min 57.4 secs respectively, finishing first and second into the bargain.
Sunday's competition was at Warrington in very warm and dry conditions. Personal bests were recorded here by Jennifer Jones in the girls 800m: Mike Perry in the boys 800; Mike Jones in the boys 800; Barbara Jones, ladies 800; Pete Jones, Senior Men's 800: Neil Henfrey, young colts 100.
The most obvious disappointment of last weekend must have been the unusually poor performance by Janet McGee in the women's Northern Championships. She must have started one of the favourites to win the title, having just seven days earlier be-come the Merseyside champion in a new personal best time and new championship best time of 2 min 19.6 sees. However, to finish fifth best in the north is certainly nothing to be disappointed about, is it?
This Saturday sees competition renewed between the best that Merseyside Schools can offer. The venue is The Oval, Bebington. The prize a chance to represent Merseyside in the all England Schools competition which brings together the best the country can offer. Many of our present internationals came up through the same system and some younger ones still compete at this level. Qualifying standards are high, but have already been achieved by Wallasey Athletic Club members who will be competing.
