The most outstanding result from last weekend's athletic programme as far as the Wallasey Athletic Club was concerned, was the performance of Chris Wright.
He was selected to represent the Merseyside Schools in the English Schools' cross-country championships. He finished in third place for Merseyside, 59th position overall, out of the 352 runners in the junior age group race. The team finished in sixth place in this race, the performance helping the full Merseyside squad to finish in an overall position of fourth for all the different races. Our congratulations and thinks to Chris for his performances throughout the season.
Last Sunday, a group of the younger members of the club travelled to Stretford to compete in the last of their winter track meetings.
There were no outstanding performances, but there were some very encouraging ones. Philip D'Arcy showed his all-round ability when he finished 2nd in the 100 metres. You may remember that he finished second in a 1500 metres two weeks previously.
Carole Jenkinson continues to improve, and, in her first outing on the track for the club, Karen Howley surprised everybody by running extremely well to finished second in her 800 metres. Phil Ashley, after a short lay-of finished extremely well and encouragingly in the 600 metres, gaining two places in the last 100 metres.
The sprinters didn't perform too badly, despite the over officiousness of the starter, who appeared as an 'I know it all and can never be wrong' character who are fortunately for the sport, becoming less in number.
Michael Michael finished second in his 100 metres and second in his 300 metres, whilst his brother Andrew finished 4rh in his 300 metres.
He was one of the unfortunates to succumb to the starters wrath.
