The annual meeting of Wallasey Athletic Club was held on Friday, April 9. It was well-attended, with 50 per cent of the book membership there.
The officers gave their reports on the year's activities, each one being optimistic for the future. They were inspired by the ever-increasing membership and interest in the club.
This new 'lease of life'' has also inspired the reformation of the Supporters Association, the secretary of which is Mr. Derek Howley, of 12 Neville Road, Wallasey. If there are any readers interested in joining this association, please do not hesitate to contact him.
The general secretary of the club is still Mr. Douglas Hanna, of 9 St. Elmo Road, Wallasey, and the clubs captains are Miss Ann Morgan, for the female membership, and Mr. Rod Dixon, for the male membership. Each individual age group of the club, from the youngest through to the oldest has its own captain.
Two days after the A.G.M. (Sunday) saw the return to Wallasey of the Northern Veterans' runners, aged 40 and over. Once each year these runners come to Wallasey to race round the roads in the Harrison Drive area.
The course is well-marked by younger members of the athletic club to whom many thanks are given.
Their help was much appreciated by the runners who were able to run at full pace, confident that they were on the correct course.
This year's run was won by Baldwin of Wrexham A.C., in 32min 15sec. Second was M. Morrell, of Wirral A.C. in 32min 36scc and third was John Wright, of Wallasey A.C. in 32min 38sec. Very close-fought race, first team award went to Pembroke A.C. and second to Wirral A.C.
Last Saturday, some of the female members of the club travelled to compete in the Chester & Ellesmere Port Athletic Club's cross-country races. A team of three competed in the intermediate girls races, over a rather long one-and-a-half mile two-lap course.
Carole Jenkinson finished in 31st place, Joanne Macdonald, 37th, and Paula Huston 48th. The two runners from Wallasey in the senior race ran extremely well to finish second and third respectively, Susan Lloyd and Barbara Majumdar.
Following their two defeats by Wallasey Athletic Club, at basketball, Wirral Athletic Club members challenged them to a Bank Holiday Monday football match at Centre. The result of this match was 6-4 in favour of Wallasey, both, teams comprised of Wallasey athletes. Would all members please note this additional fixture - a sealed handicap race on Saturday, May 8. All members are invited to attend to make this at least as successful as the Christmas handicap races.
Take special note also of the availability of the booking form for the club dinner in September. Tickets are going fast, already over 40 of the available 100 have been sold, see Doug Hanna immediately to secure your place.
