Another Christmas is almost upon us; the time of parties, decorations, cards, last minute shopping and the Wallasey Athletic Club Christmas Handicap races. As the course includes the sand of the Leasowe Bay area competitors are hoping the tide will be sufficiently 'out' to avoid the 'paddle zone' area of the race.
It looks as if numbers will far exceed the previous best of 35 runners over this year's slightly modified course; All competitors are requested to present at the Guides' hut at 2.30 pm in order to report and collect their numbers. The year has finished with yet another club record, this time by an overjoyed Chris Preston, in the indoor meeting at RAF Cosford, Wolverhampton. Chris finished second in the senior competition with a putt of 12.62m. In many ways, 1976 has been a good year for the club. The summer season was rounded off by an excellent dinner-dance at the Hotel Victoria. The present cross-country season has seen the emergence of the youth's team as a definite threat to the larger and therefore, better known clubs around the area.
These achievements have been made through the determination of the athletes who have trained in all weathers over the country, road sand, from many and varied venues.
The club has used its 70th year well and is short of only oneitem; a club headquarters to replace the one vandalised some while ago. Is there really a Father Christmas? Handicaps are detailed below. Members not mentioned who wish to compete should contact Doug Hanna, Bob Brimage or Anne Brimage immediately on arrival at the Girl Guide HQ, where changing facilities have been proffered.
