Again the weekend weather did nothing to help the performances of any athletes.
On Saturday, two Wallasey Athletic Club athletes travelled to Warley, Birmingham, representing Merseyside in the annual pre-English Schools inter-county match and two others declined that invitation to compete in the Northern under 20 championships at Kirkby.
The Warley athletes, Janet McGee and Ian Mcleod both ran reasonably considering the constant showers of rain and hail, finishing respectively 1st and 2nd in their events.
Neil Tunstall and Kevin McGee also had a reasonable day, battling against the wind which proved strong enough to damage the wind gauge.
Neil ran a strong 400m hurdles to finish in third place clocking 59.1 seconds his 110m hurdles was not as successful position-wise, but he did record a personal best performance of 16.1 seconds.
Kevin ran in two 1500m races, the first to qualify for the final the second, the final itself. His time of 4min 04.6 seconds was as fast as expected and he was obviously disappointed with his time and consequent seventh place.
The following day, again wet, several younger members travelled with some of the senior athletes to Hartford, South Cheshire, as guests in a Cheshire League match.
The majority of the performances show an improvement, others are a first time performance and are a valuable indication of the ability.
Special mention must be made of the excellent running of Pete Doyle. He sliced four, seconds off his previous 800m time and ran an extremely good last leg in the 4x200m, pulling back a 6m deficit but narrowly missing, by 0.1 seconds, the first place.
Wallasey A.C. now waits to hear who has been selected to run in the English Schools team for Merseyside. Selection was being made last Saturday night and athletes will probably know by the time these notes are read if they have been invited. Those waiting are Ian Mcleod, Neil Tunstall, Janet and Kevin McGee.
