The first track races of the season for many local athletes were held at the Kirkby Stadium on Saturday. The meeting had been postponed for one week because of the heavy snowfall but the athletes hardly enjoyed the drenching they got at the weekend. Allowing for the conditions, heavy rain, blustery winds and flooded track, results were far from unsatisfactory.
The sprinters found themselves battling into the wind and rain which must have added at least 0.5 seconds to even the fastest time.
The majority of the athletes were testing their strengths and weaknesses after heavy Winter work, before deciding on the
best way to tailor their training to give the best results in the Summer months, and the all-important championships.
The tricky winds also Affected the middle distance runners but it |id provide the opportunity to test the new found stamina and strength.
Even at this early time in the year, some personal best performances were recorded which must mean that this coming year will bring good results for Wallasey Athletic Club.
Tomorrow, some of the club's older athletes will be travelling to London, along with 5,000 other athletes, to compete in the annual National Cross-Country Championships being held at Parliament Hill Fields. This race marks the end of the cross-country season and the start of a short road race season.
March 14 sees many club members competing in such an event at Sefton Park, the annual TSB Road Races promoted by Liverpool Harriers.
