Despite absences through sickness and holiday, Wallasey Athletic Club still managed some very good performances showing again that team spirit and enthusiasm still manages to win over serious problems.
The club field event specialist, Chris Preston, now residing in Birmingham, but remaining a member of Wallasey, managed to pick up 33 points in all by winning the hammer and the shot and finishing third in the discus. Following close in his heels was one of the clubs' older members, Doug Hanna. Now 36, Doug competed in six events and scored 29 points, on the way winning his 110 hurdles race, third in his discus, second in his javelin, third in his 400 metre hurdles and second in his hammer.
The small but loyal squad of 10 athletes were well rewarded for their efforts managing to finish fourth and thus prevent the decline of the previous two years. The competition was indeed close with Blackburn finishing only two points behind and Altrincham only four points ahead.
110 hurdles: W. Innes 5 (21.5), D Hanna 1 (20.67).
4 x 100: team 6 (50.8).
4 x 400: team 6 (3.58.2).
