Last Saturday the girl's section of Wallasey Athletic Club, took part in the annual Ellesmere Port cross-country races. The turn out of our girls was disappointingly low, but the girls that did run performed very well.
In the under- girls race, Joanne Johnson and Leslie Phillip's ran together for most of the race moving steadily through the field until Joanne produced a sprint finish that saw her move up to 28th position while Leslie held on to finish a very creditable 32nd in the one mile race out of a field of 120.
Lynn Kennedy, running in the junior girls 1-mile race, was up with the leading group at halfway, but had to give way as the fast early pace took its toll. Lynn should still be pleased with her 21st position in a good class field.
Wallasey's only other runner was Anne Brimage in the senior three miles race. Anne started slowly but worked through the field to finish 38th out of over 50 starters. Lynn and Anne both received prizes for being the first local athletes to finish in their respective races.
Tomorrow, three of our girls have been selected to represent Merseyside in the English Schools Cross-Country Championships at Sheffield, Lynn Kennedy and Francesca Phillips in the intermediate race and Janet McGee In the senior race. The selection of the three girls to represent the county is a fitting climax and just reward for the hard work they have put in during the winter months.
On Sunday several members of the club run in the track meeting at Kirkby. This should give an early indication of how the winter's training has gone and what work is still needed.
By now most members will have had details of the club's annual meeting to be held at St. George's School on Friday, April 2. This is a meeting for you - the club member and you should make every effort to attend. If you have not received details contact Doug Hanna (638 0296) now.
