Wallasey Athletic Club attended the last meeting of the Dunlop Young Athletes League held at Warrington last Sunday.
With so many athletes of school age taking exams, only a token number of athletes attended. A blustery wind precluded any outstanding performances.
Paul Beacall of Wallasey boys' age group completed the double in both his sprints taking first place in the 100 metres in 12.00, seconds and the 200 metres in 25.1 seconds. The 200 metres event was a personal best for Paul.
In the long jump, Paul was second in the A team with a leap of 4.75 metres. Mark Yates was third in the B team with a leap of 4.16 metres.
Nigel Thompson ran a creditable 3000 metres in 10 minutes 21 seconds, a personal best and finished in second place for the A team. Mark Yates ran in the boys' 800 metres finishing in fifth place .in two minutes 27.7 seconds, also a personal best.
At the end of the meeting a surprise awaited Paul Beacall and Nigel Thompson when the team manager, R. Hewson, was told to ask the two athletes, to report at the meeting's secretary office.
Two grade three titan standards certificates awaited them, and will, no doubt, be treasured in the future, when they look back at the beginning of their athletics careers.
The certificates are issued by the Amateur Athletic Association.
All interested] athletes from schools etc. are invited to continue their athletics at Wallasey Athletic Club by ringing 638 3435 or 639
