Three Wallasey teams contested the Liverpool & District six-stage road relay championships in Sefton Park, an event which demonstrated the increased strength in depth of the club's senior team.
Bob Brimage gained comfortably the fastest time of the day, recording 13:54 for the 2¾-mile course, as he ran first for the 'A' team. The remainder of the team were Pete Lonsdale (15:02), Alan Johnson (15:31), Andy Skinner (14:43), James Downey (15.02), and Ken Gibbon (15.15), who combined for 20th position.
The surprise of the day came on the opening legs for the 'C' team where two new members having their first race for the club - Tony Bradeley with 14.25 and Jimmy Redmond with 15:20 - opened up a 1½-minute lead over the 'B' team.
However, the consistency over the last four legs of the 'B' team, with Dave Baker running 15:11, Rob McWilliam 15:16, Keith Simpson 15:22 and Dave Pendleton 15: 18, was such that they not only overhauled the 'C' team, but pulled back to within three places of the 'A' team in 23rd place.
Four of the Wallasey runners in the race - Jim Kirby, Alan Johnson, Mal Hardcastle and Les Pullin - were using it as a sharpener for next Sunday's Mersey Marathon. All showed their preparation had gone well with Jim Kirby the fastest of the four.
