Wallasey A.C. athletes turned out in force for the second Liverpool & District Cross-Country League race held at Upholland.
In the senior race, Dave Walton led Wallasey home in 68th place, improving on his 86th place in last week's opening fixture at Runcorn. Ian Canning, absent last week, was 2nd scorer in 69th position, in a close battle with Dave Walton. A much improved run saw Graham Beggs 3rd scorer in 108th.
These athletes were well supported by David Field who ran well at Runcorn. Pete Lonsdale had an improved run this week along with Alan Johnson, though both not yet fully fit, showed true Wallasey fighting spirit to make the scorers, in a very strong field of 241 athletes.
In the youth's race, Geoff Smith ran creditably again, though absent this week through injury, the talented Stephen Field deserves praise for his 5th position in last week's fixture.
Also in this age group, Wallasey have suffered with the absence of Phil Cuthbert, who was selected for Merseyside in their match against Dublin at Sherdley Park last week. Phil a runner
of great potential, was 4th scorer for Merseyside in 9th overall position, a fine run by any standards.
This week he was joined by club and school colleague Paul Johnson, in selection for Mosslands v Caldy inter school match. Phil gained a fine 2nd place with the vastly improved Paul in 5th position. These athletes are two fine home-grown prospects of Wallasey A.C., coached by Alan Johnson.
In the colts race, Wallasey have two rising stars in David Beggs and Brian Powell who has only been with the club a short time. They both ran well, Brian reversing positions on David from last week's race at Runcorn, to take 13th position with David 15th, despite having a nasty ankle injury in the race.
Wallasey AC would like to encourage more local runners to come and join them. Ring Graham Beggs on 632 2178.
