Wirral AC took full advantage of a disappointing turnout in the final Liverpool & District Cross-Country League fixture of the season at Stadt Moers Park to end a long run of dominance from Liverpool Harriers and claim their first league title in more than 10 years.
A strong team performance from Wirral, placing five runners inside the top 10, was enough to claim the overall title despite Harriers winning the two previous meetings. With just one representative in the field, Harriers failed to complete a far team, leaving the Wirral line-up of, Phil Robertson (2nd), Phil Langan (3rd), David Brockway (4th), Steve Spence (6th), John Hunt (10th) and Richard Davies (16th) triumphant. Following an excellent individual victory from James Loftus, Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton secured second spot with Wallasey AC rounding off the top three. Mark Wynne (5th), Sean Firkbridge (7th), Jonathan Bride (11th) and Matt Thompson (22nd) completed the scoring for LPS. Skelmersdale Boundary Harriers' Debbie Campbell was the first female home, with the Wallasey duo of Sallie Holt and Helen-Anne Stansfield completing the podium positions. The Liverpool & District Championship event takes place on Sunday, February 7, at Clarkes Garden with pre-entries only and no guest runners permitted.
