The National Standards meetings held at Kirkby Stadium each Tuesday evening provide local athletes with much needed competition at this time of the track season, and Wallasey's runners' have not-been slow in taking advantage of the excellent facilities provided.
In recent weeks a dozen or so have made the journey a worthwhile one by 'lifting' a number of Standards and recording some very fine times.
Last week's result was no exception, and Alan Kin (440), Barrie Smith (1 mile), Mel Schless (1 mile), Dave Lockley and Johnny Jones (steeplechase) all came back with fine, performances tucked under their belts.
Perhaps the most noteworthy of these was Barrie's 4 mins. 30 secs. in the senior one mile in which he came so close to breaking his personal 'barrier' and a sub 4-30 time should be his for the asking before the season closes.
Wallasey Athletic Club have received a belated invitation to send a team to the final inter-club meeting at Warrington next Saturday. This match should provide club members with a good opportunity of clinching the times and distances that may have been eluding them all season, and a large party is expected to make the trip a successful one.
