A large gathering assembled at the Lamb Hotel, Wavertree, on Saturday, when the Liverpool & District Cross-country Association held their opening run of the season. Prizes were given to the first man home in both senior and junior breaks, as well as to the club for the largest muster and the man showing the neatest costume.
The turnout was quite up to the average, totalling 288, and representatives of the following clubs were present; Liverpool Boundary, Liverpool Gordon, Liverpool Oddfellows. Richmond, Runcorn Holy Trinity, Rylands (Warrington), St. Austin's (Thatto Heath), Wallasey A.C., Liverpool H. & A.C., Liverpool Gym., North Liverpool Gym., Ravenhead, Runcorn Tally Ho, Sacred Heart (St. Helens), Sefton, Sutton, Warrington A.C., West Cheshire, Waterloo H. & A. C., and St. Helens Parish Church.
The mile break for seniors resulted as follows: -
E. Plant, Wallasey A.C., 1; J. Roberts, Sefton, 2; H. J. Lyon, Ravenhead, 3; H. Wilcock, Ravenhead, 4; C. H. Spence, Wallasey A.C., 5; H. Holbrook, Warrington A.C., 6. Won by 10 yards: same.
The novice break ended as follows:- J. Taylor, Liverpool H. & A.C., 1; T. Hill, Ravenhead H., 2; T. Connor, St. Austin's Thatto Heath, 3. Won by three yards; same.
The muster prizes were won by Runcorn Tally Ho with 36, North Liverpool Gym. (33) being second.
C. N. Chavasse ( a son of the Bishop of Liverpool), and a well-known Oxford University athlete, running for St. Helens Parish Church, took the neatest costume prize.
