The above club held first handicap of the season last Saturday, the distance being about 4½ miles.
The handicap was framed from A. G. Nicholson (captain), and the starts ran out to 4½ minutes. About 20 runners competed, and there was some very keen racing. The winner, R. Young, ran a very well judged race. He had a minute start, and won easily from W. J. Pinfold, of 1.45, with H. Ladyman, 1.15, third. Young is running splendidly at present and his victory on Saturday was a very popular one. Willie Lace who was fourth had very hard luck as he was only beaten for third place in the last ten yards. However, with his usual good nature he took his defeat in a true sportsmanlike manner. The fastest time was done by the club champion, T. J. Brookes, viz., 23min. 27sec., while the winner was only 13sec. slower. Mr. T. Garnett, a useful supporter of the club, acted as time-keeper, while the Secretary acted as starter. The first 12 men home and their respective times were as follows:-
min. sec.
1. R. Young 23 40
2. W. J. Pinfold 25 31
3. B. Leaman 24 45
4. W. G. Lace 26 33
5. C. H. Spence 23 52
6. T. J. Brookes 23 27
7. J. D. Jones 24 40
8. E. S. Bale 24 6
9. H. J. Smyth 26 27
10. R. J. Lowes 25 35
11. A. G. Nicholson 24 31
12. J. McGuire 26 31
To-day there is an ordinary run from headquarters, Fairhaven Institute, Sea View-road, Liscard, at 3.30 p.m. prompt. Next week the club entertain Ravenhead Harriers, the Liverpool & District Junior Champions, who beat Wallasey last year in the championship by the narrow margin of 4 points, so that great interest will be taken in the fixture. The race is to be a mile break, and the club novices race will also be run in connection. Friends of the club are asked to kindly remember the whist drive and dance.
