Last Saturday the annual county championships were held at Hartford, Northwich, where four Wallasey athletes emerged as county champions and many were well-placed.
One of Wallasey's and indeed many other clubs, weaknesses is the field events section. But in Eric Taylor there seems to be the makings of a fine javelin thrower. He threw further than ever before on Saturday to win with 184 ft.
David Lockley in his first 3,000 metre steeplechase of the season, romped away with the race to leave the rest of the field half a lap behind with a winning time of 9 mins. 40 secs.
Bob Warburton won the youths' 800 metres comfortably in 2 mins. 4 secs. Bob has yet to be pushed this year and under the right conditions should go close to 2 mins. dead.
Gary Fair won the youths' 1,000 metres steeplechase in a time of 3 mins. 9 secs. He is running strongly at the moment after a hard winter's cross-country and with sharpening work should do some good times.
Mike Teahan ran well to finish 3rd in the 1,500 metres senior won by Olympian Alan Blinston, whilst Bob Brimage finished fourth in the youths' steeplechase.
In a good class triple jump competition Alan Shears did well to finish fourth with a jump of 43 ft. 4 ins.
