Last Saturday Cheshire youths 880 champion Bob Warburton was placed a very close third in the annual schools inter-counties championships.
Bob came within four-tenths of a second of being first home and, with more top class races should soon be recording first class times.
SALE VISIT
Many of Wallasey's athletes last week travelled to Sale for an inter-club competition and although only a comparatively small group, there were many fine individual performances.
Recently having re-joined the club after three years at college, Margaret Ashcroft is beginning to return to the running form she showed before her period of athletic inactivity.
Hard work began to pay off at Sale when she recorded two personal best times. In the 800 metres she ran second in 2 mins. 29.5 secs. Second place came her way again, in the women's 400 metres, in 65.8 secs.
In the Junior Girls' 800 metres, Jill Ackers, Susan Lloyd, and Julie Halfpenny finished 5th, 6th and 7th positions respectively with the very good times of 2 mins. 43.0 secs.: 2 mins. 43.5 secs. and 2 min. 44 secs.
Pete Lewis showed that his training at university is paying off when he finished 3rd in a good class 800 metres senior race in a time of 1 min. 57.8 secs and then finished 4th in the senior 200 metres in a time of 24.2 secs.
Dave Lockley ran two strenuous races and gained two second places. In the senior 2000 metres steeplechase he lost by a nose in 6 mins. 2 secs., and then completed his efforts with a strong run in the 3000 metres for second place.
This Saturday a group of the clubs senior athletes compete in the Northern A.A.A. champs, whilst a group of younger athletes travel to Stretford for an inter club competition. All the members wish Barbara Banks the best of luck in the women's National 1500 metres race in London this week.
