In the third Merseyside Schools League meeting at Woolton, Peter Martin running in Wallasey Grammar School colours, Gary Fair and Bob Brimage representing the Technical Grammar School were chosen to represent the league against the Stoke and Coventry Schools League at Trentham.
For Peter Martin this is his first representative honour in the Junior Boys' section, his 6th place came as a result of steady running over the past three winters. To Gary Fair and Bob Brimage (reserve) fourth and 12th in the senior race, its the same old story, as both have represented Cheshire Schools in past years.
SATISFACTION
They also gained the added satisfaction of seeing the Technical Grammar School take the lead in the Senior boys' league from all the other leading Merseyside schools. Bob Warburton ran despite injury into 10th place for the team.
The club's senior runners failed to match the success of their younger counterparts, running over a hilly 7-mile course at St. Helens in their second Liverpool & District League race. First home for Wallasey was Dave Lockley in 17th place, mysteriously failing to make any impression at the front.
With Wallasey's other counters inside 50, a certain degree of well balance could argue as an omen when everyone is fit. The individual race winner was Ron Barlow leading Sutton Harriers,. the current league champions, home.
REPRESENTING
With many of the boys absent representing their schools, the boys and ladies races were combined. First home for Wallasey was Barbara Banks, 5th in the race, and first lady, Margaret Ashcroft was third in the ladies' section. Of the boys, Gwyn Grithies was 9th and Geoff Beechey 19th.
Club members are looking forward to seeing Carl Gee back around after his unfortunate accident.
Next week Wallasey Athletic Club will be organising the Wallasey Schools Races over the notorious 'killer' course of the sandhills.
