At the women's Cheshire Cross-Country Championships held at Port Sunlight, Wallasey Athletic Club's ladies' section won the team award in two races and had the individual winner in two races.
Barbara Banks, the ladies' captain was individual winner of the senior race from Jane Perry of Wirral A.C.
Barbara, who won by 150 yards, over the tough two mile course, also had the satisfaction of leading her team to first place.
Wallasey entrants were inside the first five, Margaret Ashcroft ran her very best for third place and Jean Beswick was 5th.
INTERMEDIATE
The intermediate girls were also team winners with Sylvia Brimage not quite on her usual sparkling form third, Susan Carter 5th, Lindsay Mutch 11th and Lillian King 17th, all exceeding expectations and bringing home the team prize.
FIRST AGAIN
In the Junior Girls race Wallasey had individual winner Lillian Ackers. A surprise in that her great potential had never shown up before. Fourteenth was Susan Lloyd, and 15th, Julie Halfpenny completing the team which was third.
Barbara Banks and club coach Carl Gee must take a lot of credit for gradually building up the ladies' section to what is without doubt the strongest in the county, from virtual non-existence 12 months ago. Any new girls are always welcome and should contact the captain Barbara Banks, 'Sandicote', Harrison-drive or telephone 639-2800.
Today Wallasey Athletic Club will be sending teams to Blackpool for the H. S. Finney championships, but will be pushed for a high placing with most of the top North-Western clubs present.
