Although Wallasey A.C. finished two teams in last Saturday's seven-mile road race at Sutton, it was evident that without internationals Ron Barlow and Brian Woolford the senior section is in for a lean period for a couple of years to come.
Senior distance runner, John Wright, arrived too late to compete and so it was left to Dave Lockley - one of five youths in Wallasey's colours - to lead home the 'A' team in 50th position, nearly 2½ minutes behind the winner, J. Haslam of Bolton.
Club captain Barrie Smith pulled back 13 places on the last lap of 2 miles to finish 31 seconds behind Dave and was 58th.
Team positions were: 1 - Manchester 28 points; 2 - Blackpool 77 points; and 3 - Longwood 108 points, whilst Wallasey's teams were 18th and 20th from 24 teams completing the race.
In the 2 miles boys road race, close packing by the Wallasey team brought them into 7th place from 26 teams.
The Yanks are coming to Witton Park, Blackburn, today for the women's international cross-country race over a 3½-mile hill dominated course and ladies' captain, Barbara Banks will compete for the North of England in a race which the U.S.A, have entered an official team.
Barbara is fully fit again following a foot injury and is expected to give a good account of herself in what is virtually a full international event.
