The inaugural meeting of the Merseyside Track & Field League takes place at Pilkington's track at St. Helens tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 p.m., and Wallasey Athletic Club is one of the eight local clubs involved. It is the first of a series of five meetings. A full track and field programme has been arranged and even 'Cinderella' events such as the pole vault and hammer have been catered for.
An "A" and "B" system of scoring is being operated, whereby each club enters its stronger competition in the 'A' event, whilst the 'B' competition will be able to score as many points in his even, thanks to the 'seeding' system.
Although most clubs will be below full strength this Saturday because of school holidays, etc., club captains Barbara Banks and Brian Smith will have the support of something approaching 40 athletes for the contest, and an added incentive to score well is a place in the area finals for next year's proposed National League.
Track sessions are now in full spate each Tuesday and Thursday evening at Lingham Park and new members should note that the starting time is 7.30 p.m. prompt, with an assembly time 15 minutes before.
Last Wednesday saw the final session in the gym until next autumn, and so training on Wednesday evenings will be at Leasowe Road until further notice.
